Yoshi's Island Stamp by StampPKU Yoshi's Island Stamp by StampPKU
Oh, the magic of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. A neat little side story for this visually rad game -- Shigeru Miyamoto was being pressured from critics to create a Donkey Kong Country-styled title due to its stunning success. He scoffed at the idea, saying that anyone who enjoyed the game only enjoyed it for its "mediocre gameplay".

Haha, but I adored this game as a child. Bumping into the puff balls that made the music wonky and screen dizzy always terrified me to the verge of tears~

I really wish they would make a proper sequel to this game, Yoshi's New Island was nothing but a huge let down.

I love that game! :D I have it for both SNES and GBA. In the GBA version, I mastered the whole game! (meaning I got a perfect score in every level)

I know, did they seriously have to make it look like New Super Mario Bros just because it was on the 3DS? It would've been cool if they used the art style from Wario Land Shake It and made the story more original with actual good music, original bosses that take more than 3 hits and brought back the SNES sound effects from the original game instead of the ones from New Super Mario Bros Wii and lastly a better final boss.

I remember having a blast with this game as a kid, first on the SNES, then on the GBA. One of my favorite games, starring my all-time favorite video game character.

As of yet, Yoshi's Island has yet to have a worthy follow-up (I consider Yoshi's Story and Yoshi's Island DS to be merely okay). Here's hoping Yoshi's New Island and Yarn Yoshi will be the sequels I've been waiting for.

Little trivia: Those puffballs are called Fuzzies ingame and in the manual, despite not resembling Fuzzies from ANY other Mario game.

My favorite platformer on the SNES. (my favorite SNES game of all time is Secret of Mana, but my favorite platfomer is Yoshi's Island) The gameplay and music were wonderful, the graphics and artstyle were cute, the polygonal effects were pulled off very well, and the game is quite challenging at times. I also like how it manages to pull off some very gross stuff too (like the frog boss).

Yoshi's Island is so cute game with the graphics and all, I had it when I was a kid :la: But one day, my dad sold my SNES and all games for it to one of his friends :'( He probably thought, that I wouldn't play SNES anymore, because I had just got PS1 for Christmas back then. I want my SNES back, so I could play this and all other SNES games I had :(

And I agree about the fuzzy guys! They scared me too, haha.

SMW2: Yoshi's Island, one of my favorite side-scrolling 16-bit games of all time. :D There was just so many things to see, and do in the game. It felt like there was alot of freedom in it. Plus the artsy-style graphics, and special visual effects (such as the sunlight effects in forest levels, and the giant enemies/bosses) were great, and unique for their time.
And yeah, the "Touch Fuzzy Get Dizzy" level was a hoot. ;)

Actually, what Miyamoto said was something more along the lines of, "DKC is proof people would put up with mediocre gameplay if the graphics were good." (I have to admit, while DKC was a good game, I did think the DKC sequals had better levels, music, more secrets, and more to do in them personally.)
I recall some people (especially DK/Rareware fans) actually got quite mad at Miyamoto at that remark. (In fact, the owner of the

He (Miyamoto) later appoligised for it though, stating he onley said that because his bosses were very impressed by Rare's DKC game, and kept pressuring him to make the Super Mario World sequal he was working on have the same rendering graphics style as DKC.
To wich actually lead to him to go the opposite route, and use the prossessing power of the Super FX2 chip, (used in the cancelled "Star Fox 2" SNES game) to help create the visual art style, and stretching/warping effects in the game. (Ironically, there was even a few 3D polygon-like effects in the game to.)
Needless to say, the different graphics style impressed them enough to change their minds, and that's how the game got it's look.

While, DKC (and simular titles) did have good graphics, I'm glad Yoshi's Island went with it's own graphics style instead.

It's funny, I never had an SNES but I played DKC at other people's houses, and eventually got the remake for GBA, then got a ROM when my brothers lost my GBA cartridge. And I love DKC. I've never thought "The graphics look so awesome!" until I got older and could actually appreciate them, but I've always loved the gameplay. There's no point in getting mad at Miyamoto I think, but I do think he's silly for saying that, because DKC is just a good, fun sidescrolling platformer (which are few and far between, it seems...) that ended up having awesome graphics for its time. And really, I don't think many kids pay too much attention to graphics; they want stuff to look "cool" but they don't really appreciate really good graphics...and I bet it was mostly kids playing DKC back in the day.

I haven't finished DKC2 yet, but I do think that it's only to be expected that the sequels would be better than the original. I mean, I know it doesn't turn out that way all the time, but it should be that way. I should go back to playing DKC2. X3

Well, after DKCReturns for Wii came out, Miyamoto finally quelled rumors that he "hates DKC." (In fact it was his idea to make a new DKC game. He said they took notice alot of fans wanted one, wich shows Nintendo does listen to it's fans sometimes.)

So I'm not sure if the story where he said it was "mediocre" is true now.

In fact, he even stated he was even involved with the development of it, and constantly in contact with Tim Stamper, and the people at Rare in charge of making the game.

As for "DKC2: Diddy's Kong Quest," that's actually my favorite of the DKC games. ;) I love the levels, the enemies, the secrets, the challenge, the music, the animal buddies, the NPCs, everything about the game.

It's a great title! It's really annoying that Miyamoto felt any sort of pressure during working on this, too. I'm sure it affected the final product in negative ways as well.

AND DUDE, did you hear Miyamoto recently? I think it was during or shortly before E3 this year, he was like, "I don't know where everyone's getting this idea that I hated Donkey Kong Country!" Poor guy. He's so misunderstood~

Yeah, in fact the reason "Donkey Kong Country Returns" was made in the first place is because Miyamoto himself asked Retro Studios to make a new DKC game. (That's what they said in an interview at E3.)
So it's pretty ignorant to assume Miyamoto hates the DKC series, because of that old remark.

BTW I noticed I accidently cut myself off in my previous post. ^^;
What I was going to say was,
"In fact the owner of a DKC fan club I saw somewhere on-line once said something not very nice about Miyamoto." (Wich is ironic, because he is the original creator of DK, in the first place.)
